Energy Saving In The Home

With the rising costs of, well, just about everything, we wanted to look into ways of saving money and there’s no better place to begin than at home.

A key area to focus on in terms of saving that hard earned money, is looking at energy usage. There are many ways of saving energy, and not only does this help with budgeting, but also contributes to less waste and reduces the negative impact on the environment.

New-build homes are much more energy efficient than older places, as they are designed with better insulation and make the most of modern features. This could save you over £700 per year in energy bills. Not only do these insulated walls and windows trap heat, but they also help to keep your home cool in the summer, so it’s a win win.

As well as considering a new build for your next move, there are other ways of watching energy usage at home. We’ve highlighted some key rooms in the house and opportunities to save:

  1. Living room

  • Check TV’s aren’t left on standby, and that lights are off if no one is in the room

  • Keep curtains closed and use draught excluders near doors to seal in warmth

2. Kitchen

  • Use a slow cooker vs. the oven, as these use much less energy (and the taste of anything slow cooked are so worth it)

  • Invest in a three tier hob, to cook three separate elements on one hob ring

3. Utility Room

  • Tumble dryers are extremely energy intensive so use sparingly, and find alternative drying methods such as positioning clothes airers by open windows, or even a heated clothes airer

4. Bathroom

  • Replacing old and inefficient shower heads could help you save up to £70 per year

  • Take quicker showers, saving on both water and gas bills!

5. Bedroom

  • Update lights to LED bulbs, as these are 75% more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs

  • Unplug chargers when they’re not in use

  • Purchase a winter duvet to keep that warmth in instead of putting the heating on
